This strives to institutionalize non-violence and peace education in the educational sector. In conjunction with the Regional office, WANEP-Nigeria designed peace education materials to train teachers and students as well as establish peace clubs/mediation programs in schools. A test of these materials was carried out in different primary and secondary schools in the country, where 13 of these schools became actively involved. This program was designed to address the issues of violence and non-violence among young people.
Training of teachers
The workshop took place at the Royal Palace Hotel, Enugu. The training brought together 30 teachers: 12 females and 18 males from various schools in Enugu, South East zone. This was to test the materials developed by WANEP through the training thereby equipping teachers and students with skills that will enable them facilitate the institutionalization of peace education in Nigerian school.
Training of Peer Mediators
The training took place at the FSP Multipurpose Hall, Enugu. The training brought together 70 students and pupils from different schools in Enugu aimed at equipping participants with the various conflict resolution mechanisms leading to the cultivation of a culture of peace. At the end, the participants resolved to change an live in harmony and influence their peer group through formation of peace club in their various schools.
Inauguration of Peace Clubs
This took place in Union Secondary School, Awkunanaw, Enugu. The occasion which brought together thirteen participating schools (teachers and students) also had in attendance the Regional coordinator for the program.
Monitoring Visit and disbursement of fund
WANEP-Nigeria in collaboration with the Regional office visited all the schools where Peace clubs were inaugurated to monitor the growth of the clubs. The sum of N13.500 was disbursed to each of the peace clubs to boast their moral and interest in the club.
Sensitization workshop:
In collaboration with Peculiar People Foundation, WANEP-Nigeria organized a 2-day sensitization workshop on peer mediation. The workshop brought together over 100 students and ten teachers in four schools in Lagos. Schools that attended the workshop are:
1) Falomo Junior High School 2) Falomo Senior High School
3) Ireti Junior High School
4) Ireti Senior High School
Peace Poem competition
Letters were sent to 13 of the schools involved in the program to participate in the competition. The entries received were sent to the Regional office for the regional contest.
